The Z Hotel

Why Go on a Bush to Beach Safari Holiday

The African continent is home to a wide range of stunning beaches. With the Atlantic Ocean on the western coast and the Indian Ocean on the eastern part of the continent, beach lovers cannot get enough of that African surf and sand. And while there are many breathtaking options to choose from, the world-famous beaches of Zanzibar are definitely worth taking a closer look at.

Situated on the east coast of Africa, Zanzibar boasts its colorful history as an important trade center during the spice trade of the 16th to 17th centuries. The Tanzanian island still boasts its production of spices like cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon but it has also become an up and coming destination for beach-goers.

One major beach destination on the island is Nungwi Beach situated at the north-western tip of the island. It is home to powdery white sand, crystal blue waters, and exotic flora and fauna. Here are eight other reasons why Nungwi Beach is your next island paradise destination:

1. Warm temperatures all year round

The island of Zanzibar is located around the equatorial region and gets warm sunny weather most of the time, perfect for getting your tan on. Just watch out for the occasional rain and storms before your visit.

2. Amazing sunset views

Nungwi Beach, Zanzibar runs along the western coast to the northern tip of the island so it is witness to amazing sunset views, which will surely score points for those who want to get social media-worthy photos. Tourists can enjoy a drink on the rooftop bar as the sun sets over the tropical horizon. Locals also offer a sunset cruise on a Dhow boat. This is one of the reasons that make Nungwi a popular romantic destination for couples.

3. Experience nature up close

Mnarani Natural Aquarium is situated in the northern part of the village. The conservation site is run by locals and is focused on rescuing green and hawksbill turtles and releasing them during the month of February.

Tourists can wade through the shallow waters during the low tide and see colorful shells and small marine animals. Local residents are also known to gather seafood in the tide pools just beyond the beach. Cows also tend to roam around the southern part of Nungwi beach, Zanzibar.

4. Thriving nightlife

As the sun sets, Nungwi Beach continues to thrive with its vibrant nightlife perfect for those who have fun with a few drinks in hand. Cholo’s Bar is the oldest bar in the village and it is host to parties on Thursday nights while Mangi’s Bar is the most popular bar in the village. It is a great place for a sunset drink just before the party starts.

5. Enjoy local flavors

A trip to Nungwi beach, Zanzibar will not be complete without tasting the local cuisine. Nungwi beach offers various restaurants that will cater to everyone’s tastes. Nungwi Beach Restaurants vary from French Fusion dishes, classic Italian, to local dishes tourists may want to try. The best place to try some local food is by the village market where Chef Bakery and Munira Restaurant is located. They are known for serving the best Zanzibar food in the village.

6. Dhow boat building activities

A Dhow boat is a generic term for sailing vessels used in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean region. Most fishermen use Dhow boats to catch fish and other seafood in Zanzibar. These vessels are constructed along the beach near the fish market so tourists can come and see the techniques used in building one. Some fishermen also offer teaching tourists in basic Dhow boat building.

7. Walking around the village

There are a lot of things to see around Nungwi Village and locals are very much used to seeing tourists. The village market is host to a lot of items from local fruits and vegetables to souvenir items. This is a good place to try more of the local delicacies and snacks such as date nut bread, fried plantains, and octopus and fried cassava. Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves are in almost every stall just in case you want to take some home. Remember to keep your shoulders and knees covered to respect the local culture.

8. A Hodgepodge of culture

Nungwi Beach is witness to centuries of different cultures and traditions, which evolved into their local identity. The beach is situated on an island that is an important location for the spice trade hence it has a mixture of Indian, Asian, European and African cultures. This can be seen in the locals’ livelihood, religion, values, and cuisine.

You can find numerous amazing beaches in Zanzibar, however Nungwi Beach remains as one of the best and most popular ones on the island. Make Nungwi Beach your next tropical destination today and enjoy the very best of Zanzibar. It promises to be unforgettable.

Choosing the right hotel for your stay is one of the most important decisions to make on any holiday trip. Your accommodation could potentially make your holiday great or the worse one you’ve had yet. So here are a few tips to help you find the best hotel to stay in Zanzibar.

Know Your Budget

Decide how much of your travel budget you want to use for your accommodation. This way you can narrow down your search according to your budget from the get-go. Ask yourselves the following helpful questions. How much do you want to spend on your accommodation? How much are you willing to spend to feel comfortable and content with your lodging? These types of questions will surely set things in perspective and will help you land the best hotel to stay in Zanzibar according to your budget. Booking a luxury hotel, mid-range or even a budget hotel will be largely determined according to this.

Decide What’s Important For You

Another thing you should consider when deciding which hotel to book is to know what is important for you to have in the hotel. For example, is it important to be close to the beach? Must the hotel have WiFi connection in all the rooms? Is there a free breakfast served? Do you need a 24 hour reception? Deciding what is important for you will help you determine the factors to look for in a hotel when you’re booking. This way you can narrow down your search to your preference and need during your holiday.

Take Your Travel Companion Into Consideration

If you aren’t traveling alone it is also important to take into consideration your travel companion or companions. Their comfort and happiness would also determine the success of your trip. So don’t forget to ask them what they need as well. If you’re coming as a family maybe booking a hotel that has conjoining rooms is ideal for you. If you’re on your honeymoon trip then maybe staying at a hotel with private suites would fit the bill. Do your companions want to enjoy uninterrupted access to the beach? Then a beachfront hotel like the Z Hotel would be ideal. You can enjoy ocean access and even a number of water activities.

Value For Money

Don’t compromise your comfort just because you’ve found a cheaper hotel. Find the right balance between your budget and you need. A boutique hotel in Zanzibar for example can offer you that luxury experience with a personalized touch. You may want to put that into consideration when choosing between a boutique hotel or a luxury chain hotel on the island. Sometimes visiting the island when it isn't peak season can even get you a lower price for the same value. So timing your holiday during those months can be worth it. Any traveler would definitely want to be able to enjoy a wonderful stay worth every penny they’ve spent.

Where Do You Want To Be Located

Do you want to be near public transportation? Do you want to be in town? Or do you prefer to be by the beach? Do you want to stay at a quieter area on the island? These are some of the questions you can ask yourself so you know where you want to be. There are a number of beaches on the island and each with their own characteristics. Nungwi beach is one of the more popular choices for visitors so there are a number of choices located in this area. So determine first where you would like to stay and then narrow your search from there.

Determining which hotel is best for you to stay in Zanzibar really depends on your own needs. No one traveler is ever exactly the same so relying on what others say isn’t always ideal. Asking yourself the right questions, reading through the reviews and thoroughly conducting your search is all part of what you need to do to find the best hotel in Zanzibar.

A safari beach holiday combo is the quintessential African holiday experience. Combine extraordinary wildlife viewing across endless plains with the white sand beaches and crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean in this once-in-a-lifetime experience. This ultimate combo means you get to savor the best of both worlds  — all in a single holiday. Visit iconic national parks and reserve and spend time under starlit skies in the African bush, then head on to the relaxing seashores where you get to lounge on palm-fringed beaches and dive into exquisitely turquoise waters.

You can definitely look forward to an exciting holiday filled with diverse land and water experiences, unforgettable adventures, and idyllic relaxation. Ready to nail your perfect safari and beach combi adventure? Here’s some things to consider:

Safari or Beach First?

The ideal itinerary revolves around doing the safari part of your holiday first and ending your trip chilling by the blue waters of the ocean. This is because it provides a real sense of balance to your overall African travel experience, blending unforgettable adventures with some much needed R&R. Spending time in the wild can be tiring, especially since many of the most thrilling safari activities like game drives and hot-air balloon rides tend to start in the wee hours of the morning. Of course, you wouldn't want to miss any of these activities but it makes more sense to do them first so you can spend the second part of your holiday swimming with dolphins, among other things.

When to Go

Many safari and beach destinations are open year-round, so the question of when to go usually depends on your budget and if you are looking to witness spectacular events that occur at specific times of the year. For instance, if you’re planning your trip to coincide with the Great Migration in Kenya or Tanzania, then you’ll want to book at a time when the herd will be in your location. If you are looking to travel at a time when there are fewer crowds at the parks and beaches or you have a somewhat tight budget, then consider arriving during the off-peak season. Everything is generally cheaper (flights, accommodation, entry fees, local transport, etc), plus the thrill of enjoying the place to yourself.

What to Pack

If you’ve been to a beach before, then you probably already know what to pack. If you have the luggage space, you can bring in your own beach supplies, but rest assured you’ll find everything you need there. What about what to pack for your time in the wild? Well, in this case, you should keep in mind that the temperature in Africa can vary a lot depending on your time of visit, so you’ll want to pack some jackets and light layers that you can double should the temperature drop. This is usually at the crack of dawn when you’re heading out into the wild on game drives and hot-air balloons. Is your itinerary limited to game drives alone? Then you’ll just need some comfy shoes and flip-flops. However, if you will be participating in nature walks and mountain hikes, then be sure to bring a pair of hiking boots. The other necessities are pretty standard -- hats, insect repellents, sunglasses, long earth-toned clothing, and swimming gear.

Bring Some Cash Along

You may be able to use your credit card in major cities, but not so much when you start exploring national parks and beach resorts. That’s why it’s best to just have some cash on hand, especially since you never really know when you might need it. For example, you could come across some awesome souvenirs along the way that you’d like to buy or maybe you want to tip your guide/driver for the day. The good news is that the US Dollar is widely accepted in many safari and beach destinations so you don't even have to convert it to the local currency.

Booking Through a Safari Tour Operator

Traveling independently is a great way to ramp up the African holiday experience but on a trip like this, it might be more ideal to have someone else sweat the small stuff (domestic travel, local transfers, accommodation, tour guides, etc). This way, you get to fully immerse yourself into the adventure that you came for. Not only will a tour operator help you design the perfect itinerary to suit your tastes and budget, but they’ll also provide any other special assistance as needed.

All in all, it’s not hard to nail a safari and beach holiday combo. So what are you waiting for? Contact us and plan your ultimate safari and beach holiday today!

Zanzibar is one of the most popular tourist destinations across the continent so it has seen more than its fair share of special occasions and celebrations. And like any good celebration, people need to eat. In fact, some special occasions are even more fondly remembered because of the fantastic dining experience that followed. Now this beautiful world-famous island is home to dozens of restaurants all featuring some pretty delicious cuisines on their menus so it can be a bit daunting to choose the perfect one for your special event.

More importantly, you want to be able to narrow your options and choose the best fit for your plans ahead of time so you can get a feel of the place and make reservations. Here are some things to consider to help you choose the perfect restaurant in Zanzibar for your special occasion:

Location

Naturally, the location of the restaurant is a crucial consideration. You don't want to have your event on one end of the island while the food is being served on the other end. Choose a restaurant that is easily within reach for you and your guests. They’ll thank you for it. Being an island, you may decide to opt for a restaurant that offers fantastic views of the ocean. You can also look for fantastic locations like restaurants with unique architectural features to add more prestige to your dining experience.

The Type of Event

When choosing a restaurant, it’s important to consider the type of occasion. For instance, if you are celebrating your 30th wedding anniversary, you may decide to book a table in a restaurant which doesn't play loud music or which won't be too busy. On the other hand, if you are planning to celebrate your 21st birthday, then you may wish to opt for a restaurant with more energy and a lively bar area, like a rooftop bar.

Menu

Once you have located a restaurant with the right look and feel, it’s time to turn your attention to the dishes on the menu. Consider the palate of your guests and make sure to take note of any special dietary requirements that they may have. Nothing will spoil a party like having guests who are not able to enjoy the food. For instance, if you know that some of the people attending your event are vegetarian or vegan, you should check that the restaurant has dishes that are suitable for them.

Service

The kind of service that you will get in the restaurant is another critical consideration. Are the staff welcoming? What about the waiters? How clean is the restaurant? The service of the staff is likely to be reflected in the quality of food that you will eat.

The Price of The Food

When choosing a restaurant, you should consider the price of the food in comparison to how many guests you are expecting. It’s important to splurge and have the time of your lives (you’re in Zanzibar after all), but make sure you’re not stretching your budget on the food alone. Zanzibar is a magical place offering many unforgettable experiences and you’ll want to enjoy as many of them as you can. Trust us on this.

Ambiance

The ambiance matters a lot when you are choosing the perfect restaurant. What’s the general atmosphere of the restaurant? You might find a good option with great outdoor designs, but the interior décor and lighting might not be your taste.

Popular Restaurants in Zanzibar

To help you narrow your search, we’ve put together some of the popular restaurants in Zanzibar that you can use for your special occasion.

Many visitors staying in the Nungwi area of Zanzibar have savored the contemporary African-European fusion offerings of this alfresco restaurant. You have to try their seafood dishes prepared by their chef to understand what the hype is all about. Saruche also features imported wines, which only complement the whole “dining by the ocean” experience. The Z Hotel also has two other food and drink destinations on the premise - Cinnamon, a light and airy café bar overlooking the ocean and Rooftops, an open-to-the-sky champagne and cocktail bar with a well-stocked menu.

  • The Rock Restaurant

Located in the Michamwi Pingwe peninsula, a 10-minute car drive from Paje, The Rock Restaurant is sometimes referred to as the floating restaurant due to it being situated on top of a huge slab of rock. Here, guests can enjoy the open-air terrace with panoramic sea-scapes and fresh delicacies.

  • La Taverna

This is a great option if you and your guests have an appetite for well-cooked Italian food. La Taverna is the place to go for crispy pizzas and home-made pasta in Zanzibar. It is located in the Mkunazini of Stone Town so it is easily accessible from different parts of Zanzibar. The menu contains all the delicious classics of Italian cuisine, including tagliatelle bolognese, panini, and pizzas prepared in a wood-fired oven, as well as a wide collection of top international wines.

Planning a trip to Zanzibar? Congrats, Zanzibar serves up the perfect combo of beach and culture! This amazing island is located off the coast of Tanzania and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Africa. With lots of activities to do like snorkeling, surfing, and kite surfing, as well as the opportunity to learn about culture and history, Zanzibar isn’t just a beach vacation but also an educational experience like no other.

If you’re already planning a trip to Zanzibar Island or want a great island vacation, there’s a lot you’ll need to know about this beautiful destination, chief among them, the accommodation options. There are different areas of Zanzibar, each with its own feel and vibe, so you want to be able to choose the right place to stay during your visit. When traveling, picking the right hotel can be quite the chore. If you’ve never stayed at a boutique hotel before, you probably don’t know what sets them apart from other hotels, or how you could benefit from choosing a room at a unique boutique hotel.

What is a boutique hotel?

You might have heard the term ‘Boutique hotel’ taking shape in the last couple of years. Well, they’re not the regular branded luxury chain of hotels you see almost everywhere. These concept hotels are built around the idea of a unique, wholesome experience for guests. A boutique hotel is petite with a strong personality and filled with a contemporary vibe and a quirky, modern spirit. While the reasons are endless, we thought it would be a good idea to highlight some of the best of them. When choosing a place to stay in Zanzibar, here’s why you should go for a great boutique hotel.

1. Personal Service

At a boutique hotel, the main objective of the staff is to provide you with personalized service. Due to the relatively smaller sizes of boutique hotels, their staff are able to cater to the needs of each guest and take personalization to new heights.

2. Upscale Design

Many traditional, larger hotels feature basic design and aesthetic, with a heavy focus on accommodating more guests. On the other hand, a typical boutique hotel is designed to show off extraordinary architecture. This makes boutique hotels the perfect place to take memorable photos of your time in Zanzibar.

3. Great Location

Since boutique hotels are a lot smaller than chain hotels, they can occupy much smaller spaces. This makes it easier to build the perfect place to stay in choice locations around the island. Location is a huge factor to consider when staying in Zanzibar since it can mean the difference between access and close proximity to several of the island’s highlights.

4. Artistic Decor

From the lobby to the restaurant to the rooms and beyond, boutique hotels usually have a theme that creates a cohesive atmosphere. Some even further extend the theme’s reach by making sure each decoration expresses the individuality of the boutique hotel’s personality.

5. Private and More Intimate Experience

One of the perks of staying in a boutique hotel in Zanzibar is the amount of privacy it provides compared to your average island hotel. The intimate setting of these facilities offers a sense of privacy and communal spaces, particularly for guests who like to mingle.

6. Relatively Affordable Pricing

Boutique hotels offer a lot of exciting advantages, which probably makes you wonder about the cost of staying in one. Well, the good news is that most of them are actually very similar to average hotel pricing. While generally more expensive than a motel or a hostel, a boutique hotel is still a favorite accommodation option among Zanzibar tourists.

7. Luxurious Accommodations

Accommodation at a boutique hotel is often much more luxurious, such that for the most part, no two stays are ever the same. Boutique hotels can easily change with the years and the seasons, so if you come back next year, you can end up staying in different rooms with radically different aesthetics and layouts.

8. Knowledgeable Staff and Local Connections

Boutique hotel staff are often local, dedicated and incredibly knowledgeable about the area. This allows them to help guests with more nuance and detail compared to the staff of a large hotel. It’s also easier for boutique hotels to make connections to other local businesses, such as partnerships with restaurants, tour agencies, spas, and many other facilities around Zanzibar that guests can benefit from during their stay.

Now you know where to go. Talk to us today about your Zanzibar boutique hotel accommodation and we will work with you to deliver the right fit for your travel needs.
